Heritage Christian Academy was looking for a way to give back to the community and provide volunteer opportunities and experiences for all its students outside of the school's annual high school mission trip when it created the program Mission HCA. Mission HCA offers our students at every level an opportunity to give to others the love and truth that has been poured into them. The vision of this program is to expose our students to community, national, and global needs, allowing them to discover and utilize their spiritual gifts and unique temperaments in a variety of ministry opportunities, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the Great Commission.
For secondary students and teachers, one day each semester is designated as Mission HCA Day. The students and staff are divided into mission teams, and each team participates in a different mission project in our local community. In addition to mission day, the high school students have the opportunity to take part in the annual mission trip at the end of the fall semester in December. Mission trips have varied and changed throughout the years, but have included anything from international work in Mexico at orphanages, to trips within the U.S. to places like New Orleans to provide disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina. This past year, the students went to the city of Mission, Texas, which is located in the poorest county in the country. They helped spread the love of Christ by partnering with Big Red Ministry in work efforts and by putting on a vbs/camp for the local children. A video of the trip can be seen here, and the school is happy to announce, that it will be returning this December to work alongside Big Red Ministry again. Lastly, several secondary students during the summer are given the resources to partner with their local churches and other mission organizations to serve in countries around the world.
As for the elementary students, they participate in mission projects throughout the year as well. Those projects range from visiting and making cards for nursing homes to doing a can food drive for local pantries. From top to bottom, our students are given the opportunity to share the love of Christ with others. In fact, the success of this program has been recognized outside of our small community. The Association of Christian Schools International named Mission HCA an exemplary program; one they hope to see implemented in other schools under their umbrella.
